There’s probably more to be said about this topic. It’s hard to enforce such a strict policy for my summer classes when, if I’m being completely honest, our school has a fairly “light touch” during the year when it comes to tardies and truancy. Students get in the habit of thinking it’s OK to roll into class a few minutes late when teachers let it slide.
I’m guilty of it myself; it’s often easier to let a kid in and continue to teach my class than it is to stop everything and take care of whatever consequence late students should receive. At the same time, our school’s administration has bigger fish to fry than “Johnny was late to class today” and I get that. It’s just, when something like this happens, it makes you kind of sad… even if the kid did tell me to “eff” off.
